How Noble Society Works

Nobility is determined by Mage ability. Anyone with Magecraft is noble, those without are not. Non-talented children of Magi do not inherit, usually going into the Janissariat, if the mage has them raised as family, or fostered into the estate families.

Natural parents of Mage-born are given a rise in status, living the rest of their lives in comparative luxury.

Magi adopt mage-born of from their lands to become their heirs. Un-adopted Mage-born, those of the Great cities, barbarian foundlings & refugees are raised “of the Turkhan”, ie on the public purse.

Magi Raised of the Turkhan are typically found at age 8-10, and immediately fostered to a mage-household to be educated, and raised as mage-born. At 16 they enter the Janissariat as cadets, and serve two years in the Army as subalterns, then at 18 they enter the Muktaban, the College of Magi, and after three years of Study, graduate, and begin life as Magi.

New Magi either go into service in one of the State offices, seek service with a Master Mage or apply for a Land Grant. A land Grant is a Title to some area of lands, almost always on the borders of the Turkhanate, unclaimed wilderness or disputed borderland, which the new rulers must explore, pacify and rule.

Lands are allocated by the board of surveyors an office of the College of Cartographers.

It is usual for several Magi to join in a compact of their own to apply for a land grant together, getting a more desirable grant, and pooling resources for the task of securing it.

As Magi are the Patrons of Turkhanate society, ambitious men will often pledge themselves to one mage, or a compact of Magi, to further themselves.
